Announcements
One updated policy–the University Green Space Use Policy–and one new policy–the University Facility and Space Use Policy–are now available on the University Policies website for all members of the Brown community. Together, these policies provide clear guidance for the use of campus spaces, supporting the University’s commitment to a safe, inclusive environment that fosters the open exchange of ideas.
The most substantive clarifications and key points in each policy are outlined below.
UNIVERSITY GREEN SPACE USE POLICY
This policy, which governs the use of Brown’s green spaces, has been updated to clarify expectations, align with other University policies, and ensure that our shared outdoor spaces remain welcoming, accessible, and well-maintained for all.
Key updates include:
- Reservations and use requirements: Tabling, along with other activities, now requires reservations; outdated restrictions on reservable spaces have been removed. Camping is prohibited on all green spaces.
- Impact on University functions and surrounding neighborhood: Clarifies noise guidelines, including expanded guidance on neighborhood impact.
- Responsibilities and consequences: Sets clear expectations for cleanup, care, and billing for damages.
- Alignment with other policies: Reconciles terms and language across policies and included reference to the Policy on Use of Campus Space by External Third-Parties, the Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy and the University Facility and Space Use Policy.
The revised policy is now posted on the University’s Policy website: University Green Space Use Policy.
UNIVERSITY FACILITY AND SPACE USE POLICY
This new policy establishes a clear framework for the use of Brown’s facilities and spaces, addressing a longstanding need for consistent guidance across the University’s diverse properties. It defines access, responsibilities, and expectations for all faculty, staff, students, affiliates, and visitors, ensuring that campus spaces remain safe, accessible, and aligned with Brown’s mission.
Key elements include:
- Scope and clarity: Defines “University Facilities and Spaces” broadly, covering all indoor and outdoor spaces, leased properties, and specialized facilities.
- Reservations and use requirements: Outlines permissions, hours of operation, ID requirements, and requires reservations with sponsorship from a recognized unit or organization.
- Use restrictions: Prohibits camping, unauthorized activities inconsistent with a facility’s intended use, and public nudity outside approved contexts.
- Responsibilities and enforcement: Clarifies user responsibilities for cleanup, damages, and compliance, with disciplinary consequences for violations.
- Alignment with other policies: Connects facility use to related University policies (e.g., Protest and Demonstration, Political Activity, Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment, Event Disruption Protocol, and University Code of Conduct).
The new policy is now posted on the University’s Policy website: University Facility and Space Use Policy.
These updates reflect Brown’s ongoing commitment to making policies clearer, more accessible, and more consistent across the University. By providing straightforward guidance for the use of our facilities and outdoor spaces, these policies aim to support safety, inclusion, and community engagement while preserving Brown’s resources for teaching, research, and campus life.
We appreciate your cooperation in upholding these standards and helping ensure that all members of our community can enjoy and benefit from Brown’s shared spaces.
Sincerely,
Francis J. Doyle III, Provost
Patricia Poitevien, Vice President for Campus Life
