Announcements
As Commencement and Reunion Weekend approaches, I am writing to share a few reminders to help students prepare for the days ahead. Earlier this week, the University shared a message with the full Brown community, which I encourage you to read here.
This is an important and joyful time for Brown. Across College Hill, students, families, friends, alumni, faculty and staff will come together to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates and the traditions that make this weekend so meaningful. Each of us has a role to play in helping ensure that everyone can fully experience the pride, connection and celebration of this milestone.
With that shared purpose in mind, I ask that you review the reminders below. They include guidance on community standards, safety resources, event expectations, support services and our shared responsibility to care for one another throughout the weekend.
Know your responsibilities.
The Code of Student Conduct applies everywhere, including off campus, and applies to all students, including those preparing to graduate. Serious violations may result in disciplinary action, including the withholding of diplomas.
Be mindful in your spaces.
If you are hosting or attending gatherings:
- Plan ahead and take responsibility for your guests
- Be mindful of noise
- Respect neighbors and private property
Prioritize safety.
- Fires are not permitted on campus
- Follow local ordinances if you are off campus: take care when using fire, donate or dispose of items properly, and don’t leave items on sidewalks
- Stay aware of your surroundings and look out for one another
BrownAlert is how Brown sends emergency instructions and important safety information during Commencement and Reunion Weekend. Guests can opt in to BrownAlert by texting “Brown” to 78015. Students should make sure their contact information is up to date in Banner.
Rave Guardian is an app that Brown community members can use to contact safety officials, report suspicious behavior, and access a mobile panic button.
Safewalk is a free Public Safety program that provides Brown community members with point-to-point walking escorts on and near campus.
If you need immediate assistance, contact the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management at 401-863-4111. You can also use blue light phones located across campus.
Know event expectations.
- Only guests with wristbands will be permitted at certain events
- Follow instructions from event staff and volunteers
- Visit the Commencement website, download the BrownU app, and encourage your family to do the same so you are all prepared for the weekend.
Respect others.
Expression is part of our community. However, behavior that interferes with others’ ability to participate, or that violates policies related to discrimination, harassment, or disruption, is not acceptable and may result in disciplinary action.
- Applicable University policies, including the Protest and Demonstration policy, are available on the Campus Life website.
- If you need to report a concern, use the Report an Incident page or contact the Office of Equity Compliance and Reporting.
Take care of yourself and others.
If you feel a threat to safety or if you or someone you know is having a health emergency, you should immediately contact the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management at 401-863-4111 or call 911.
This time of year can bring a lot of emotion and stress. Support is available through CAPS, BWell, and Student Support Services. Please reach out if you need it.
Thank you for doing your part to make Commencement and Reunion Weekend safe, welcoming and celebratory for all. This weekend is filled with meaningful moments: goodbyes, reunions, reflection, pride and joy. I hope you take time to celebrate, care for yourself and others, and honor the people and experiences that have shaped your Brown journey.
I look forward to celebrating with you.
Warmly,
Patricia Poitevien, MD, MSc, FAAP
Vice President for Campus Life
